Similarly, in human cardiomyocytes, CBD eliminated the adverse effects of hyperglycaemia by reducing oxidative and nitrative stress, NF-κB activation and cell apoptosis 143. Studies on isolated small mesenteric arteries have shown opposite effects of CBD in these two models. In the former, the vasorelaxant action of CBD was reduced, while in the latter enhanced 48. These opposite effects may result from different pathogenesis and changes in the endocannabinoid system in employed hypertension models 20. In addition, there were also some differences in mechanism of vasodilatory action of CBD in these two models (see Table 4) 48. Similarly to the SHR, the vasodilatory effect of CBD in isolated pulmonary arteries was reduced in patients with hypertension 48.
How to Choose a Safe CBD Product
The computer-based searches combined the words “(cannabidiol OR CBD) AND (randomized clinical trial OR double-blind OR placebo-controlled)” without language restriction. Cannabinoids can affect cardiovascular function not only by cannabinoid receptors, but a variety of other receptors, located both in is cbd addictive the nervous system and directly in the blood vessels and heart 19,35,71,72. Activation of CB1 receptors located in the myocardium reduces contractility. In addition, cannabinoids can stimulate or inhibit the Bezold-Jarisch reflex, characterized by short and strong bradycardia and hypotension, via TRPV1 and 5-HT3 receptors located on sensory vagal nerve fibres 19,72.
What to Consider When Getting a Drug Test
- For this reason, it is crucial to consult a doctor before starting to use CBD if you are taking other medications.
- “It’s important to start with a low dose until you know how your body will react to CBD,” said Lindsay Slowiczek, PharmD.
- CBD can also interact with other medications you’re taking, such as blood thinners.
- Many nonprescription drugs, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), have this same effect.
- Therefore, it is crucial to choose products that are of high quality and manufactured with safe practices.
- Although it doesn’t produce an intense high, it still may provide desirable effects for some patients.
- While some believe that broad- and full-spectrum products provide more health benefits, there’s a lack of evidence to support these claims.
People with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often experience sleep problems, including nightmares and insomnia. These difficulties can lead to sleep deprivation, which may make PTSD symptoms worse. Anxiety disorders can make it difficult to fall asleep, and people with insomnia can develop anxiety about sleep itself. It’s unclear if CBD helps with both anxiety and sleep, or if people simply sleep better when they are less anxious. A 2023 study found that emergency room visits for cannabis-related problems increased 1,808 percent among people 65 and older from 2005 to 2019 in California. Similarly, a 2024 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found a jump in cannabis-related ER visits among older adults in Canada after cannabis was legalized.
Depression
CBD improved subicular and CA1 subfields volumes in the brains of chronic cannabis users, suggesting a protective role of CBD against brain structural harms conferred by chronic cannabis use 40. Moreover, CBD was shown to have low abuse liability 50, 51 and to be effective in decreasing cannabis addiction 52, 53. De Petrocellis et al. found that 1-10 µM CBD significantly inhibited human prostate carcinoma cell viability, inducing apoptosis and elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) 48. Exciting new developments for enhancing CBD effects in inducing cell death and enhancing radiosensitivity of glioblastoma (GBM) cells were recently published 49. GBM cells treated with CBD, γ-irradiation, and KU60019, an ATM kinase inhibitor, increased apoptosis and with strongly upregulated arrested cells, blockade of cell proliferation, and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, improving CBD effectiveness.
May have neuroprotective properties
In December 2015, the FDA eased the regulatory requirements to allow researchers to conduct CBD trials. In 2018, the Farm Bill made hemp legal in the United States, making it virtually impossible to keep CBD illegal — that would be like making oranges legal, but keeping orange juice illegal. Patient participants voluntarily provided self-rated PROM responses. Participants received a summary of findings at the end of the study but were not directly involved in developing the research question or study design. Cannabis weaves a complex tale with appetite and digestion; THC sparks hunger, CBD soothes inflammation, and THCV curbs cravings.

Cannabis has long been tied to the infamous “munchies,” that irresistible urge to raid the fridge after a few puffs. Yet, its relationship with appetite and digestion is far more nuanced, offering potential benefits for weight management, digestive comfort, and overall wellness. This complexity arises from the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors and signaling molecules that regulates hunger, metabolism, and gut function. Through compounds like THC, CBD, and THCV, along with aromatic terpenes, cannabis can stimulate or suppress appetite, ease nausea, or support a healthy gut microbiome. As has long been the case, research on cannabis, though ramping up, is thin.
However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana, making them federally illegal but legal under some state laws. Also, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved nonprescription CBD products, and some products may be inaccurately labeled. Cannabidiol (see chemical structure, Table 1), like other cannabinoids, belongs to group C21 (or C22 for carboxylated forms) of terpenophenols. In its acidic form (see below), cannabidiol is the main components of cannabis fibrous varieties 1,4. It was first isolated from cannabis by Adams et al. in the UK 37 and from hashish by Jacob and Todd in the USA 38 Sober living home in 1940.
- In another double-blind placebo-controlled study (meaning neither participants nor researchers knew who took the substance and who took a placebo), CBD was also shown to decrease symptoms of social anxiety disorder in teenagers.
- These changes in appetite can be beneficial or problematic, depending on personal circumstances.
- All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.
- In its acidic form (see below), cannabidiol is the main components of cannabis fibrous varieties 1,4.
As always, it’s best to consult your doctor if you have any concerns about cannabis. In addition to CBD and THC, the cannabis plant contains more than 80 different cannabinoids. Each of these cannabinoids has unique properties and can interact with the body in different ways.
Though more human studies are needed, CBD may benefit heart health in several ways, including by reducing blood pressure and improving artery function. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved one CBD product, Epidiolex, for the treatment of several seizure disorders and seizures caused by tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). TSC is a rare genetic disease that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain and other body areas. A 2020 literature review on CBD and mood disorders found that multiple studies suggest CBD has properties that may help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.
Consumer health
Of 3302 invited eligible patients by 114 clinicians, 2744 (83%) provided consent and completed baseline PROMs and demographics. Of those, 2353 (86%) completed at least one follow-up PROM and were included in the analysis (Fig 1). During study follow-up, 322 (11.7%) enrolled participants withdrew due to lack of therapeutic benefit (132, 41%), finding an alternative treatment (70, 22%), unwanted side-effects (64, 20%), and financial cost (57, 17%). PROM completion rates for participants remaining on the study at each follow-up ranged from 82.8% at 1-month to 38% at 1-year. The 391 who dropped out after only completing baseline without providing a reason were generally younger, male, less educated, and less likely to be married, than those who continued on the study (Table 1).
