Deepdale was the site of the longest penalty shootout in English football history on Tuesday night.
In the third round of the Carabao Cup, after Fulham and Preston tied 1-1 in regular time, they scored a total of 34 penalty kicks, including an astonishing 31 goals. .
With the exception of the FA Cup qualifiers, this is England’s highest-scoring penalty shootout in any major domestic competition. It surpassed Derby County’s Carabao Cup clash with Carlisle United in 2016, when both sides had a record of 14 wins and 13 defeats.

It reflects a modern trend, with all five of the highest-scoring penalty shootouts taking place within the past 13 years. This may indicate an increasing attention to detail in penalty shootouts. Manager Marco Silva said that was certainly the case at Fulham, although it didn’t pay off.
“We are always ready,” he told Fulham’s media channel. “When you go into these games, preparing for penalties is part of our routine. Sometimes we repeat; it’s not just one penalty against one player. We do it twice against the same goalkeeper. But in training the preparation is one One thing, taking a penalty decision during a game is another.
For Fulham, the penalty shootout lasted longer than that miserable night at Aldershot in 1987 in the Cargo Wanderers Cup. After a 1-1 tie in regular time, the team lost 11-10 and scored 28 penalty kicks. Club record goalscorer Gordon Davies took two penalties in the shootout but missed both. It was a better result for Preston than the 10-9 victory over Oldham in the Johnstone Paints Trophy in 2014-15.
The result was a big blow to Paul Heckingbottom’s Championship side, knocking out a team that reached the semi-finals last season. Ledson scored a brilliant half-volley for Preston in normal time and scored the winning penalty after Fulham’s Timothy Castagny’s shot went over the bar. Reiss Nelson was one of 11 substitutes for Fulham’s draw with West Ham United on Saturday, scoring once in normal time.
“The penalties are very good,” Heckingbottom told Preston’s YouTube channel. “When you go deep into it and show the determination to go to penalties in the game and then they go 9-9, 10-10, 11-11… the more the game goes on, the more I want to win the game. To have that A positive ending would be really nice.
To commemorate this historic moment, Competitor Styles, here’s a detailed breakdown of every penalty on Deepdale’s unique night.
First place: Raul Jimenez. Fulham. Odds — 0-1

Jimenez gets us started. He had a big run, about 10 yards. He sidled to his left and stepped in front of the ball, deflecting goalkeeper Freddie Woodman the wrong way. This happens a few times to both goalies…
2. Ben Whiteman. Preston. Odds — 1-1

Preston captain Whiteman put the hosts on the board. A quicker run-up, a slight hesitation and then he fires the ball to the goalkeeper’s right. Steven Benda was on the right track, but couldn’t come close.
Third place: Sasa Lukic. Fulham. Odds — 1-2

Woodman was heading in the right direction, but Lukic’s penalty shot was hard and low to the right of the goalkeeper and out of reach.
Fourth place: Sam Greenwood. Preston. Odds — 2-2

Shortest run-up yet. Perhaps a dangerous moment for a major area of ridiculed delivery…
Never doubt. Benda’s right side was hard and low. The goalkeeper cannot get close to it. An ominous standard set so far.
Fifth place: Sander Berg. Fulham. Odds — 2-3

Woodman high right. For the second penalty kick, the goalkeeper was heading in the right direction, but he just couldn’t take it.
Sixth place: Jeppe Oakels. Preston. Odds — 3-3

Winger Ockels opened up his body and aimed for the top bin. It’s close to the side grid, although not quite top Corner kick and he found the back of the net. Benda was on the right track, but it didn’t work out.
Seventh place: Alex Iwobi. Fulham. Odds — 3-4

Iwobi’s penalty was a good height for the goalkeeper, but he had done the hard part, sending Woodman the wrong way. He smiled at the goalkeeper. Let’s continue.
Eighth place: Alistair McCann. Preston. Odds — 4-4

You don’t save those. Midfielder McCann hit the ball high and away from Benda.
No. 9. Fulham. Odds – 4-5

Sessegnon kept his eyes on the goalkeeper and sent him in the wrong direction, but there was a bit of tension.

He walked up to Woodman and put his finger to his lips in celebration. So far, goalkeeping skills haven’t worked for either side.
No. 10: Miludin Osmaic. Preston. Odds – 5-5

Preston striker Osmajic had the fewest touches of the ball in the game. But he made it count. That’s a 10 out of 10 for the team’s best receiver. Perfect in every way. Now for Sudden Death and those who don’t like it…
No. 11. Fulham. Odds — 5-6

At this point, Castagne’s night was going well. He fired a penalty kick to the goalkeeper’s right and the ball went in the wrong direction. There is a fist pump on the far end. Enjoy it while it lasts, Timothy.
No. 12: Ryan Ladson. Preston. Odds — 6-6

Reflecting Castagne’s penalty. High and overwhelming. The goalkeeper went in the wrong direction. Not even close.
No. 13. Fulham. Odds — 6-7

Fulham’s club-record signing took the first penalty of the night and looked a bit risky. Woodman took the right path and almost succeeded. The speed of the free throw carries the ball into the net. It was a spot-on penalty, though, right at the corner.
No. 14. Preston. Odds — 7-7

Many of Preston’s penalty goals were high. It’s admirably bold. Fulham goalkeeper Benda seems interested in this. Center back Lindsay’s penalty kick was closer to the center line than a corner kick, but it was out of reach for the helpless Benda. Preston’s players did not feel the pressure of finishing second.
No. 15: Issa Diop. Fulham. Score — 7-8

Diop took two steps and knocked the ball into the net. Woodman had not yet begun his dive when the ball flashed past him. A truly elite centre-back penalty kick. He gasped at the wantonness. If Diop can do well, this won’t end anytime soon.
No. 16. Preston. Odds – 8-8

Go up the floor and find the top corner. Benda is on the right track, but even if he guesses right, he won’t save this. Now entering the territory where the questions about the goalkeeper begin… crack open the carabao jar and it could be a long night.
No. 17: Jorge Cuenca. Fulham. Saved — 8-8

Now this is what a penalty from a centre-back should look like. These are not nonsense at all. Beautiful and readable, Woodman dives low to the left to deflect the ball away. Big fist bump celebration. Now is the chance to end the shootout…
No. 18. Preston. Saved — 8-8

Over the past 10 minutes or so, both goalkeepers struggled in the six-yard box and were suddenly out of target. This penalty is severe. Kessler Hayden could end the game, but his penalty was too straight and too central.
No. 19. Fulham. Odds – 8-9

And…normal service resumes. Woodman was diving the wrong way. The 19-year-old young Gordo was clearly unhappy with Woodman and, like Sessegnon, he walked up to Woodman and “booed” him.

No. 20. Preston. Odds – 9-9

Everyone wants this goal. Centre-back Hughes once again sent Benda the wrong way and ensured we would see both goalkeepers kick the ball.
No. 21: Steven Benda. Fulham. Score — 9-10

Benda took a shocking penalty. He taped it to the top corner. It seems like he might be better at taking them away than saving them! Woodcutter Next…
No. 22. Preston. Score — 10-10

The same applies to Woodman. Benda went the wrong way. The woodcutter’s shot was sharp and low. The show goes on and the first choice returns…
No. 23. Fulham. Odds — 10-11

Taking two free throws in the same game is risky. Although obviously not in Deepdale. Jimenez changed his approach and added a second stutter. He also kicked the ball into the top corner within reach of Woodman, who was indeed right.
24. Ben Whiteman. Preston. Odds — 11-11

Once the goalkeeper takes a penalty, the game isn’t that interesting anymore. Benda is close here and he kicks with his legs and the ball goes out the middle. He believed the penalty would be in line with the standards set before the penalty shootout. Nice mind game from Whiteman.
No. 25. Fulham. Odds — 11-12

Lukic fired the penalty in the same direction, something Woodman remembers well. Unfortunately, Lukic stuffed the ball into the top corner. Let’s continue.
No. 26. Preston. Odds — 12-12

Greenwood’s brilliant penalty beat Benda. Heckingbottom and his staff giggled on the touchline. Parents who need to sleep in the stands are not amused. After the shooting training ended, hundreds of Fulham fans who were still 190 miles away did not leave.
No. 27. Fulham. Odds — 12-13

Berger flicked the ball away like Diop but then hit it straight into the back of the net. Not in the corner, but it didn’t matter as Woodman took the wrong turn and fell to the turf. Of course, we’ve now entered goalkeeper misery. Fortunately we are not playing at Astro.
No. 28. Preston. Odds — 13-13

Oker’s shaver–sharp Punishment keeps us going. sorry.
No. 29. Fulham. Odds — 13-14

Iwobi’s uncle Jay-Je Okocha had a penalty saved by Brazilian legend Dida at the 1996 Olympics. Iwobi didn’t miss it. Let’s continue.
No. 30. Preston. Odds — 14-14

At this point, a barrier is needed. Maybe move back a yard on every penalty kick? Having a goalkeeper feels a bit pointless at the moment. They didn’t get anywhere near those kicks. Bare challenge, anyone?
No. 31. Fulham. Odds — 14-15

How’s your luck? Sessegnon had earlier tried to stop Woodman but the Preston keeper did him a favor here. The ball hit the post, hit Woodman in the back and went in. Is this an own goal? If so, that means the “goalkeeper” has more goals than saves…
No. 32. Preston. Score — 15-15

I’ve always loved those old MLS penalty kicks, dribbling the ball from the midfield line. Maybe bring in a defender and play one-on-one. Regardless, all penalty takers took two penalties and scored. Preston’s performance is indeed impressive as they have taken 11 penalties and if they miss one they will be eliminated.
No. 33. Fulham. Missed — 3-3 p.m.

at last. After 33 penalties, we had one that completely missed the target. Castagne got it all wrong, it was tall and wide. It completely does not meet the penalty standards for this penalty shootout.

Obviously, this penalty shootout will not be decided by a “goalkeeper save.”
No. 34. Preston. Odds — 16-15

it’s over. Preston’s goalscorer finished the game in normal time. He appropriately led Benda in the wrong direction. An impressive penalty shootout ended.
