In the third major acquisition from Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Black Bear has taken North American rights from FilmNation to the queer romantic comedy Honeymoon / Funeral starring Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, and Carrie Coon.
Nahnatchka Khan directs from a screenplay by Julia Bicknell about two women (Ferguson and Lee) who meet on a flight from LA to London – one en route alone to her honeymoon after being jilted at the altar by her girlfriend, the other headed home for her mother’s funeral – and wind up spending the week together.
Khan and Jennifer Carreras are producing for Fierce Baby, alongside Bicknell. MRC financed and oversaw production, with FilmNation acting as worldwide sales agent. The film wrapped production in London in September and is in post.
“Honeymoon / Funeral is an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta, and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today,” said Katie Anderson, Black Bear’s EVP of acquisitions.
The project follows two other notable TIFF sales: Sony’s deal for North America and select territories on Roshan Sethi’s Michelle Yeoh action thriller and festival selection The Surgeon, and Universal/Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s acquisition of Josh Guiliano’s Midnight Madness entry River for the US and select territories.
Honeymoon / Funeral joins a Black Bear release slate that includes Sundance hit Wicker with Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, and Peter Dinklage on October 23; Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins in (February 2027); and David Leitch’s August 2027 release of Jason Statham Stole My Bike starring Statham and Hannah Waddingham.
