In the draft budget for the fiscal year 2025, US President Joe Biden asked Congress for $2.2 billion to purchase uranium to invest in American companies and abandon Russian uranium.
The draft budget said on Monday: “The budget includes a pending request awaiting approval from the administration for $2.2 billion to purchase low-enriched uranium (LeU) and high/low-enriched uranium (HALeU).”
As stated in the draft, the request for funds is coupled with a long-term ban on the import of specific categories of uranium from Russia and is intended to invest in American manufacturers in order to reduce the United States’ dependence on the Russian Federation.
It is noteworthy that data from the US Census Bureau indicated that at the end of last year, the United States purchased $1.2 billion worth of uranium from Russia, which is the maximum level in the entire history of recording statistics.
In December 2023, the US House of Representatives approved a bill imposing a ban on the import of low-enriched uranium of Russian origin, which will remain in effect until 2040.
The draft law proposes to limit the import of low-enriched uranium produced in Russia or by a company registered there.
