Mazzarri became the second Napoli coach to be dismissed after Rudi Garcia last November, in a season that witnessed the team’s collapse and its absence from defending its title since the departure of coach Luciano Spalletti from the club after winning the league title last season.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said on the X social media platform: “I thank Walter Mazzarri, a friend of the De Laurentiis family and Napoli, for supporting the team in a difficult moment.”
He added: “He will remain in the hearts of the people of Naples and our family. We welcome back Francesco Calzona, who has already worked with us under both Sarri and Spalletti.”
Caltsuna previously worked as an assistant coach in Naples under the leadership of Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti, and left the club in 2022 to coach Slovakia and lead its national team to the 2024 European Championship.
The Slovak Federation granted permission for Caltsuna to return temporarily to Naples, knowing that the national team will play two friendly matches next March against Austria and Norway before the start of the tournament in Germany, which begins next June.
Caltsuna’s first match with Napoli will be next Wednesday, when it hosts Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.
