Basra/ Nina The Basra Agriculture Directorate announced the start of implementing a free campaign to combat the Varroa mite on beehives throughout the governorate.
The Director of Basra Agriculture, Engineer Hadi Hussein, said in a statement, “The Ministry of Agriculture/Agricultural Protection Department has provided the Basra Agriculture Directorate with a quantity of (530) envelopes of the Abilife Var pesticide for the campaign to combat the Varroa mite, which has been distributed to the agricultural divisions in (Al-Siba and).” Abu Al-Khasib, Al-Zubair, Shatt Al-Arab, Al-Nashwa, Al-Haritha, Al-Deir, Al-Qurnah, Al-Imam Al-Qaim, Izz Al-Din Salim, Al-Imam Al-Sadiq and Al-Madina), which in turn our technical staff in the prevention units in the agricultural divisions will distribute to licensed beekeepers.
He called on licensed beekeepers to visit the agricultural divisions for the purpose of receiving pesticides in order to preserve the safety of the beehives from this dangerous pest that has a major impact on honey production.
Hussein stated, “The Varroa mite is considered one of the most dangerous pests that affect honey bees in the world, and its infection causes direct and indirect losses that ultimately lead to the loss of honey bee colonies, unless it is treated.” / End
