Hamas released six more hostages on Saturday as part of its cease-fire deal with Israel, the last living captives to be freed under the current truce in Gaza.As part of the cease-fire agreement, Hamas committed to releasing at least 33 of the nearly 100 captives remaining in Gaza, a number of whom are believed to be dead, in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinians jailed by Israel and a partial Israeli withdrawal. Both sides are set to negotiate terms to extend the truce, but an agreement appears remote. Two of the captives freed on Saturday had been in Hamas’s hands for…
“If you label me, you negate me,” the performance artist and fashion designer Leigh Bowery said in 1993, one year before his death at age 33.Maybe it is this resistance to easy categorization that has meant Bowery never quite became a household name. His cultural influence, though, is beyond question: His provocative performances led him to work with artists including Lucian Freud and Marina Abramovic. His extreme fashions are still referenced on runways, by designers including Rick Owens and John Galliano. And his status as a queer culture icon is cemented by regular invocations at L.G.B.T.Q. club nights and on…

One important thing about Luis Rubiales’ sentencing is whether he is going to jail or he will have to pay thousands of euros to compensate Jenni Hermoso, which is all he has in The World Cup kiss without consent was won by football players.Importantly, it represents the end of impunity for this powerful man who believes himself beyond the law.Rubiales’ sentencing reminds people that the law is the same for everyone. Many will remember Hermoso as the “kissed person” rather than being the best striker ever as the Spanish women’s national team. As an iconic player, she scored more goals than…
The police in Germany detained a suspect in a Friday stabbing attack at Berlin’s iconic Holocaust memorial that left one person seriously injured. The assault, coming two days before a pivotal national election and amid a rise in antisemitic violence across Europe, occurred in the labyrinth of concrete stelae that make up the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, located across the street from the U.S. Embassy and one of the capital’s most sacrosanct sites. The police said that they were verifying the detained person’s identity and that the investigation was continuing. The police have not yet found the knife thought…
These should be wonderful times at Finca El Puente, a coffee plantation carved into the mountains of southwestern Honduras. On world markets, the price of ordinary coffee has more than doubled over the past year. The specialty varieties of coffee harvested at the farm have long commanded a hefty premium, reflecting their status as the source of aromatic brews savored like fine wine from Seattle to Seoul. On a recent afternoon, a buyer from Malaysia was visiting to taste the latest offerings.Yet the owners of the operation — Marysabel Caballero, a fourth-generation coffee farmer, and her husband, Moises Herrera —…
Two years after Apple introduced an encrypted storage feature for iPhone users, the company is pulling those security protections in Britain rather than comply with a government request that it create a tool to give law enforcement organizations access to customers’ cloud data.Starting on Friday, iPhone users in Britain will begin seeing a message on their phones saying Apple can no longer offer its Advanced Data Protection feature. The capability allowed users to encrypt almost all of their iCloud data, making messages, notes, photos and iPhone backups indecipherable, even when the information was stored in cloud computing centers.Apple is removing…
As the reality sets in that the United States is drastically diminishing its foreign assistance to developing countries, an urgent conversation is starting among governments, philanthropists, and global health and development organizations. It is centered on one crucial question: Who will fill this gap?Last year, the United States contributed about $12 billion to global health, money that has funded treatment of H.I.V. and prevention of new infections; children’s vaccines against polio, measles and pneumonia; clean water for refugees; and tests and medications for malaria. The next largest funder is the Gates Foundation, which disburses a fraction of that amount: its global…
Lucy Dacus, ‘Best Guess’Lucy Dacus recognizes that love can be precarious in “Best Guess.” She sings, “I love your body, I love your mind / They will change, so will mine.” The tempo is measured and the band supplies a subdued folk-rock march as Dacus overcomes self-conscious skepticism to commit: “You may not be an angel, but you are my girl,” she decides. PARELESYukimi featuring Lianne La Havas, ‘Stream of Consciousness’“Stream of Consciousness” will be on the debut solo album by Yukimi Nagano, the singer in the Swedish group Little Dragon. Archaeologists have found a pharaoh’s tomb in an Egyptian valley west of Luxor, Egypt’s ministry of antiquities announced this week, in what officials called the first excavation of a royal tomb since Tutankhamen’s burial chamber was unearthed over a century ago.The newly identified tomb belonged to Thutmose II, who is believed to have reigned around 1480 B.C. It was “the last missing royal tomb of the 18th Dynasty,” the Egyptian ministry said in a statement. The excavation was a joint project by Egyptian and British researchers that began in 2022, when the entrance and main corridor of the tomb were found.…
