This Palestinian man was just released from Israeli jail, but this is not his 'before' photo
A video recently went viral showing 29-year-old Palestinian man Badr Dahlan released after spending 30 days in an Israeli prison. Visibly distressed and traumatised in the video, he spoke of harsh conditions in detention and of being beaten by Israeli forces. Misleading photomontages quickly circulated online claiming to show his “before and after” images. But the “before” image is of a different Palestinian man entirely. Almost 10 years after the Islamic State group launched its conquest of the Mount Sinjar region in Iraq as part of its takeover of the country, a new film tells the stories of the Yazidi people, who suffered a genocide under the extremists’ rule. Several thousand Yazidis were killed or captured, while half a million others fled. The film “Sinjar, the Birth of Phantoms” talks to survivors about how their lives have been turned upside down, and how they still fear violence could return.
