Well, scientists aren’t exactly sure what’s going on, but everyone who’s had a drink knows how miserable they can be. This holiday season, many of us will be celebrating with a drink or three. The Paris 2024 organizers are planning to reduce CO2 emissions by around half to around 1.58 million tons, compared…
1) Russia’s war in Ukraine The 27 member states of the European Union have repeatedly promised to help Ukraine for as long as it needs to defend itself against Russia. EU leaders generally agree that a victory by Russia would be dangerous for the European Union’s security. The question is whether they will continue to stand by Ukraine in 2024. Recent weeks have seen a lot of discussion of war fatigue and waning solidarity in Brussels. EU member states are finding it difficult to unanimously sign off on the financial aid that the European Union has promised. The current approach, that it is up to…
The US and Europe can no longer compete with China after the cost of producing solar modules there dropped by 42% in 2023 to $0.15 (€0.14) per watt. That gives Chinese manufacturers an enormous cost advantage over international rivals, according to a new Horizons report from consultancy Wood Mackenzie. In 2023, China’s domestic solar additions were double those of the US and the EU combined. China, the world’s solar module powerhouse, now holds 80% of global manufacturing capacity. By 2050, it will account for over 50% of the global power supply, according to Wood Mackenzie. “China is the lowest-cost solar module manufacturer in the world. Solar module prices in dollar per watt tallied in December show China’s cost of $0.15 well below Indian ($0.22),…

Have you ever wondered why someone crying can make the room still? A new study shows that the smell of women’s tears can reduce aggression in men. Researchers found that male aggression reduced by 44% after they smelled women’s tears. The study, published in PLOS Biology, found the tears changed brain activity in parts of the brain that connect olfaction and aggression. The study provides at least one explanation for the long-standing evolutionary puzzle of why we cry — it may serve as a calming mechanism among groups. Tears contain social signaling chemicals Studies in mammalian species have shown that…
