Police detained an armed man who earlier on Thursday took staff hostage at a Procter & Gamble factory in northwestern Turkey. The seven hostages were taken as an apparent protest against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, according to the local governor’s office. Farmers have blocked roads leading to a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, using some 1,000 tractors, Belgian police said.  A police spokesman told the French AFP news agency that “there are 1,000 tractors or agricultural machinery.” Angry farmers are complaining about taxes, rising costs, cheap imports, rules and bureaucracy. North Korea, the world’s most isolated state, is this year expected to return to economic growth for the first time since before the pandemic, as weapons deliveries to sustain Russia’s invasion of Ukraine boost state coffers. A pigeon accused of being a Chinese spy has been cleared by police and released back into the wild.The bird was detained by officers after it was captured in May last year near a port in Mumbai, news agency Press Trust of India reported. Measles has been in decline around the world since the 1980s. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that is largely due to vaccination programs, which — in the past 20 years alone — saved more than 50 million lives. In the 1980s, there were as many as 4 million cases of measles per year. By the early 2020s, infection rates were down to a few hundred thousand. But measles is not gone yet.
