The Maldives government suspended three deputy ministers on Sunday after they mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. Three officials from the Youth Ministry had called Modi a “clown,” a “terrorist,” and a “puppet of Israel” on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has ordered an investigation and suspended the deputy ministers pending the outcome. “The government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high ranking individuals,” the government said in a statement. “These opinions are personal and do not represent the views…
US carrier United Airlines announced Monday that it founded loose bolts on grounded Boeing 737 Max 9 planes in its fleet. “Since we began preliminary inspections on Saturday, we have found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug _ for example, bolts that needed additional tightening,” Chicago-based United said. The plug closes a hole that could be used for an extra emergency exit door on planes configured with relatively high numbers of seats. The discovery comes after a door plug blew out on an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 on Friday, alarming regulators both in the US and abroad.…

A sex scene from the recently released Hollywood movie “Oppenheimer” has drawn online outrage in India, after it was heavily criticized by Hindu nationalist groups. One scene from the biographical drama about US physicist Robert Oppenheimer shows the protagonist reciting a verse from the Bhagavad Gita — one of the holiest scriptures of Hinduism — just before sexual intercourse. He reads the line, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” “This is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, rather it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community,” Uday Mahurkar, a senior official at the…
It was the end of communism that first paved the way for the integration of the Roma into Romanian society — in theory anyway. Before 1989, the authorities had practiced a policy of assimilation, and before them a fascist regime had pursued extermination. After Romania, the country with Europe’s largest Roma population, acceded to the EU in 2007, public policy towards Roma people was reshaped with a view to inclusion. And absolutely all such policies, including the World War II-era “explanations” for why the Roma were inferior, had previously centered on the problem of their inadequate formal education. Today, after more than three decades…
The head of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said late Sunday that part of a Boeing aircraft that blew off mid-flight on Friday was located by a schoolteacher in his backyard. The piece of fuselage recovered from the yard in Portland, Oregon could provide clues as to what caused a panel used to plug a portion reserved for an exit door on an Alaska Airlines’ Boeing Max 9 jet to blow off on Friday shortly after the flight took off. Investigators said a plug on an unused exit door seal blew off while the plane was climbing, depressurizing the aircraft at 16,000 feet (about…

In 1938, two German chemists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann, discovered nuclear fission. Fission is the reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing huge amounts of energy. Harness this power, physicists said, and you could create a bomb so powerful it could flatten entire cities. Almost immediately, German scientists commenced work on an atomic bomb project. Backed by a strong German industrial base and military interest, the Uranverein (uranium club) employed some of the world’s top nuclear experts. Although the project was secret, word got out via scientists fleeing persecution in…
