Over the past few weeks, around half of the European Union member states have seen farmers protesting against their respective national and European agricultural policies. On Monday, agricultural ministers from the bloc are meeting in Brussels to address their disputes. But the reasons for the demonstrations vary significantly. In Germany, for instance, farmers are upset about a planned reduction in subsidies for diesel fuel. In Poland and other Eastern European countries, they are blocking roads and border crossings because they want to prevent cheap imports from Ukraine. The European farmers’ association, Copa-Cogeca, has called for less stringent environmental regulations, less bureaucracy…
Peru declared a health emergency in most parts of the country on Monday after a heat wave and heavy rains led to a spike in dengue fever cases. At least 32 people have died of the disease so far this year, Health Minister Cesar Vasquez said on Monday. There have been 31,300 cases recorded in the first eight weeks of the year. “This is a grave problem,” Vasquez said last week. “And it is getting out of hand.” Vasquez said Peru’s typical response to the disease had been “overtaken” by factors such as climate. The El Nino weather pattern has…

It’s a sunny Sunday morning in Glenhazel, a suburb of South Africa’s commercial capital, Johannesburg, that has an active Jewish community. A family strolls into a cafe, its four boys each wearing a yarmulke, also known as a kippah, the customary caps for Jewish men. Just a few meters away, more than 100 ‘kidnapped’ posters are emblazoned on the wall of the KosherWorld supermarket, each of which has a photo of somebody who was kidnapped by the Palestinian militant Islamist organization Hamas during its terror attacks on Israel on October 7. ‘I am home’ reads stickers on some of the posters. Others are marked as dead…
