How did violence contribute to racist theories in the German colonies? By the early 1900s, Germany’s colonial troops had broken resistance in mainland Tanzania, Cameroon, Togo and Namibia through unimaginable violence and terror. From 1905-1907, the Maji Maji uprising and subsequent scorched earth policy in Tanzania killed over 300,000 people. The first genocide of the 20th century in Namibia killed up to 80% of Ovaherero people and 50% of Nama people. Colonialism brought colonialists and intellectuals into constant contact with non-Europeans, and casual racism borne through subjugation took a sinister and scientific tone. Why did Germany seek to legitimize its rule through racial…

One of Jared Kushner’s planned ventures in the Balkans concerns the redevelopment of a site in Serbia’s capital Belgrade. Two years before Donald Trump ran for president in 2016, he put his feelers out, telling Serbian authorities that he was interested in building a luxury hotel and apartment complex on the site of the former headquarters of the Yugoslav army, the General Staff building, destroyed in 1999 by NATO’s bombing campaigns. Although that project fell through, Kushner, who was a senior White House official during Trump’s tenure, has now reportedly reached a tentative arrangement with the Serbian government to forge ahead with the…
