Watermelons are grown throughout the Middle East, and they’re a staple of Palestinian cuisine. They owe their political significance to their colors; with their green-and-white rind, red flesh, and black seeds, they recall the colors of the Palestinian flag.  ‘Why don’t you paint flowers?’ “We were not allowed to paint in red, green, black and white: The Palestinian flag was forbidden. And the colors of the Palestinian flag were forbidden,” recalled Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour in a 2021 interview with Al Jazeera+, referring to the 1980s.Palestinian artist Suleiman MansourImage: DW/S. From meme coins to stablecoins, digital currencies designed to stay at a fixed value, the financial windfall is estimated at over $5 billion (€4.25 billion) on paper, sparking accusations of unprecedented profiteering by a sitting president. Who is German — and what exactly makes someone German? Germans have been arguing about these issues for centuries. The current German constitution, called the Basic Law, is clear and concise: a German is anyone with a German passport. Citizenship cannot be revoked. And discriminating against citizens on the basis of their religion, origin or language violates the fundamental values of the constitution. This is one of the lessons learned from the Nazi regime’s reign of terror from 1933 to 1945, which systematically disenfranchised, terrorized and murdered the Jewish German population in particular, but also Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, disabled…

The Turkish public has recently become familiar with a legal term that could seal the fate of the largest opposition party, the Republican People’s Party, or CHP. “Mutlak butlan” means absolute nullity, referring to a situation where something is considered completely void or invalid from the beginning. This is exactly what could happen on September 15, when the trial against the CHP comes to an end. If judges in the capital, Ankara, decide to declare the 38th party congress of the CHP null and void, the party’s entire reform-minded leadership would lose its legitimacy. Turkey’s oldest party, which has mobilized millions of people to protest…
