Until a few months ago, Kaja Kallas, who resigned as Estonia’s prime minister on Monday, was a lead candidate in the race to replace Jens Stoltenberg as secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), but her reputation as a Russia hawk scuttled her chances. Influential NATO member states, many from the European Union, agreed that, with the war in Ukraine, it was no longer possible to keep eastern member states on the fringe of the Brussels hierarchy. However, there were concerns that handing the top security job to a Baltic leader was too strong a message for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moreover, the possibility of a…

Ramses II is documented as having been quite vain. But you can afford to be vain when you’re a pharaoh, the ruler and protector of Egypt, the intermediary between humans and the gods. After he died, Ramses II was embalmed and preserved for eternity — but that’s not the only reason his legacy was seared into the memory of future generations. “Ramses was a great king who was a warrior. He made many battles and was the first one to have a peace treaty,” explains Zahi Hawass, a renowned archaeologist and former antiquities minister of Egypt. “And he’s a builder —…

Ukraine has thousands of kilometers of underground pipelines that bring Russian natural gas into Europe. Before Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, nearly 150 billion cubic meters (b/cm) of natural gas per year flowed through the Soviet-built pipelines annually. Since the war began, European Union states have cut their reliance on Russian fossil fuels, while Russia has slowed gas deliveries through Ukraine from 40 b/cm, which the two sides agreed to in 2019, to nearly 15 billion last year. At the end of this year, the 5-year agreement with Russian state energy firm Gazprom to continue Ukraine’s role as a transit route for gas…
