Much of Germany’s Euro 2024 was about generating the same thrill and excitement around the country as the 2006 World Cup did, or about giving the most decorated German footballer ever, Toni Kroos, a fitting farewell. But beyond collective unity the end of this tournament not only marks the end of Kroos’s career but the end of an era that peaked a decade ago. After many years of coming close to moving on from the golden generation of 2014, the likely international departures of Thomas Müller (34), Ilkay Gündogan (33), and Manuel Neuer (38) mean Germany will likely enter their 2026 World…
News about Ethel Brooks’ success spread quickly within the Roma community in Europe: “Have you heard?” people would say, “We have a Roma professor in the US!” There are perhaps a handful of Roma professors in the world, and one of them is Ethel Brooks, the first in the United States. Any Roma person who makes it to the top is well known in the Roma community: Livia Jaroka, the first Romani woman in the European Parliament, for example, or Nizaqete Bislimi-Hoso, a successful lawyer in Germany or Esma Redzepova, who is often called the queen of Roma music. India’s criminal justice system marked a major overhaul in July 2024. Three new criminal laws came into effect, replacing 19th century Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act, which were inherited from the British after securing independence in 1947. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government says that the new laws were necessary due to the colonial legislation being a central part of the country’s criminal justice system for over a century. But the move has evoked a widespread controversy, sparking concerns and intense debate among human rights groups, legal experts and opposition political parties. The new laws were passed by the…
A union representing workers at Samsung Electronics in South Korea said on Wednesday it would continue striking “indefinitely.” The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) had previously declared a three-day strike. The labor action is the largest in the tech giant’s history. It comes after the firm predicted a substantial second-quarter operating increase. What do we know about the strike? The NSEU said it decided to extend the strike because management had shown no indication of willingness to hold talks. The union said it had revised demands to include a 3.5% increase in base salary and a day off to mark…

It was perhaps inevitable that he’d mention his mum. One’s parents are a major part of one’s frame of reference, at the tender age of 16. “It was my mum’s dream, so I’m really happy that my first goal came in a semifinal against France,” Lamine Yamal told reporters at fulltime. A 16-year-old who fires his team into a European Championship final, thereby becoming the youngest goalscorer in the competition’s history, is after all still a 16-year-old. There have been breakout stars in the past, talented teenagers are nothing new. But the scale and pace of his ascent at Euro 2024…
Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce said Wednesday it is launching a probe into European policies amid an antisubsidy investigation into Chinese companies. “The Ministry of Commerce will conduct a trade and investment barrier investigation into the relevant practices adopted by the EU in its investigation of Chinese enterprises,” the ministry said on its website. A 14-foot long crocodile has been shot dead after killing a 12-year-old girl in Australia. The huge reptile, believed to be at least 30 years old, attacked the girl as she was swimming with her family last week, leading to efforts by rangers to hunt it down. Her death was the first fatal crocodile attack in the Northern Territory since 2018 and has rekindled debate on whether more should be done to curb the crocodile population. It is estimated that there is currently one crocodile for every 2.5 people in the region and the protected species has encroached on human populations in…
