Omar Marmoush is tearing the Bundesliga up. The Egyptian has proven indispensable to a resurgent Eintracht Frankfurt, with his dynamic footwork and finishing flair bringing many a defender to their knees. “The way he’s gotten himself stuck in and won over crowds, not to mention how decisive his goals and assists are, it’s clear he feels at home here,” Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller told German sports magazine kicker. While it’s now difficult to imagine the Bundesliga without Marmoush’s name in the headlines, the 25-year-old’s first years in Germany were anything but easy. Marmoush’s Egyptian education “As a kid I dreamed of being…

Earlier this year, some 45 German firms launched a 4-day workweek project to find out if such a fundamental change to how we work can achieve positive results for employers and employees. For six months, and closely watched by researchers from Münster University in Germany, the volunteer companies allowed their employees to work fewer hours without reducing their salaries. The pilot run was initiated by Berlin-based management consultancy, Intraprenör, in collaboration with the nonprofit organization 4 Day Week Global (4DWG). Achieving the same output with fewer hours and the same pay requires greater productivity. Initially, this might imply more stress and a heavier…

Where exactly is Israel? Israel is a nation in the Levant, the Mediterranean region connecting Africa to Asia. Just like the neighboring nations of Lebanon, Syria and Jordan and parts of Egypt, it’s geographically in the Middle East. Shouldn’t Israeli teams play in Asian competitions then? The state of Israel was founded in 1948 in the wake of the Holocaust and World War II. The Israeli Football Association (IFA) was founded in the same year. The IFA emerged from the Football Association of Palestine, where both Arab and Jewish clubs were represented under the British mandate. In 1956, the IFA…

Since Wednesday evening, Germany’s three party coalition government of Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) is history. The collapse ocurred when Chancellor Olaf Scholz sacked Finance Minister Christian Lindner, from the FDP, prompting other liberals to step down from the cabinet. Last week, an 18-page so-called position paper of Lindner’s was leaked to the public. In it he advocated for a moratorium on regulations and tax cuts, abolishing a solidarity surcharge in income tax for high-earners, and pushing back climate targets to 2050. Most significantly, Lindner vehemently opposed suspending a constitutional ban on excessive borrowing — Germany’s…
