A shrinking voter turnout globally and increasingly contested election results are posing a risk to the credibility of democracy, a new report revealed on Tuesday. The report published by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) said that global voter turnout between 2008 and 2023 plunged by 10 percentage points, going from 65.2 to 55.5. Why has UniCredit bought a stake in Commerzbank? Germany’s government, which bailed out Commerzbank after the 2008/09 financial crisis by taking a 16.5% stake, tipped off potential buyers last week that it wanted to sell part of its holdings in the country’s second-biggest lender.  On Wednesday, Berlin confirmed that UniCredit had outbid other hopefuls to land a nearly 4.5% stake in Commerzbank for about €700 million ($771.3 million). Typhoon Bebinca landed in Shanghai on Monday as a Category 1 storm, making it the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the Chinese financial center in over 70 years. Bebinca packed top wind speeds of 151 kilometers per hour (roughly 94 miles per hour) near its eye as it landed in the coastal Pudong district of Shanghai around 7:30 am (1:30 am CET). German police will be monitoring all of the country’s land borders starting on Monday, September 16. Until then, only travelers entering the country at the eastern and southern land borders were checked. Now, for at least the next six months, northern and western borders will also be monitored. This would include border crossings with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
