Since Wednesday evening, Germany’s three party coalition government of Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) is history. The collapse ocurred when Chancellor Olaf Scholz sacked Finance Minister Christian Lindner, from the FDP, prompting other liberals to step down from the cabinet. Last week, an 18-page so-called position paper of Lindner’s was leaked to the public. In it he advocated for a moratorium on regulations and tax cuts, abolishing a solidarity surcharge in income tax for high-earners, and pushing back climate targets to 2050. Most significantly, Lindner vehemently opposed suspending a constitutional ban on excessive borrowing — Germany’s…

Just over 50 years ago, 1. FC Magdeburg lifted the European Cup Winner’s Cup – a feat no other East German side has replicated. Now, after a long journey in the lower leagues, the club sits in the second division. “I think it was impossible to see back then what would happen to football in the east, especially right after reunification. There were just so many unknown factors. I think people may have been a bit naive,” Carsten Müller, who played at Magdeburg prior to and following the fall of the Berlin Wall and now runs their academy, told DW. Magdeburg’s transformation…

European leaders were meeting in Hungary on Thursday for a planned summit on security issues. In the wake of the reelection of former US President Donald Trump, the group made statements that were both a stoic message of independence and an acknowledgement of how European countries and the US are inextricably intertwined. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said that the European Union must work to become more self-reliant in terms of economics and security. Despite this, however, she said that both sides “will be better off” if close cooperation continues. European leaders weigh impact of Trump presidencyTo view this…

It’s been a rough few days for Democrats in the US. They didn’t just lose the White House in the election on November 5, but the Senate as well (the race for control of the House of Representatives was still ongoing Thursday evening as of local time in Washington). In an emotional concession speech at her alma mater Howard University, Kamala Harris said on Wednesday that “the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.” In addition to the flowery words, which are quite common in…

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 751 said late on Monday (November 4) that it had ratified Boeing management’s contract proposal for a pay hike totaling 59%. The move will send some 33,000 Seattle-area employees back to work and restore operations at two major assembly plants after what became the costliest strike for the company this century. The contract includes a 38% wage hike, a $12,000 (€11,000) signing bonus and provisions to lift employer contributions to a 401K retirement plan and contain health care costs. But it does not restore Boeing’s former pension plan that had been…

Back in 2016, when Donald Trump first shocked political pundits and pollsters by beating Hillary Clinton to become POTUS, it sparked a cultural backlash. American artists, a mostly left-leaning bunch, turned their creative tools into weapons of resistance to attack Trump and his worldview. Alec Baldwin play-acted Trump as POTUS on “Saturday Night Live” and won an Emmy for it. Another Emmy went to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel about a dystopian takeover of the US by the Christian far-right, a story that suddenly felt scarily prescient. There were exhibits of Trump-critical work by female artists…

North Korea’s women have won another U-20 World Cup. It’s their third to date, meaning they join Germany and the United States as the only three-time champions of the tournament. In 2024, North Korea’s women have also won the U17 and U19 Asian championships, and in October, their U17 team won their third World Cup. What is it that makes a state that, according to the United Nations, “does not have any parallel in the contemporary world” so good at youth football? “International sport is one of the few ways to demonstrate their sovereignty, existence and identity to the international community, so this…
