South Korea’s Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday, months after the ousted president’s declaration of martial law threw the country into chaos. Yoon was not present in court to hear the verdict. In a nationally televised unanimous verdict, the court’s acting chief Moon Hyung-bae said the eight-member bench upheld Yoon’s impeachment, finding that Yoon’s martial law declaration “violated” the constitution, did not not follow correct procedures and interfered with the independence of the judiciary. The verdict also said Yoon violated his duty as commander-in-chief by mobilizing troops. Yoon: ‘I am so sorry and regretful’ Yoon apologized…
As expected, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on April 2. This batch of tariffs will hit both the country’s closest allies, like Japan, and adversaries, like China. At an elaborate ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, Trump said the day would “forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn.” He added that the duties would bring in trillions of dollars “to reduce taxes and pay down our national debt.” What has Trump proposed? The tariffs add a 10% tariff on nearly all imported goods from all trading partners. Additionally, reciprocal tariffs would be imposed on imports from dozens of countries. For imports…
Tanking stock markets, collapsing world orders, devastating trade wars; economists with their hair ablaze are scrambling to keep up.But as we try to make sense of Donald Trumps’s tariff tsunami, economic theory only goes so far. In the end this surely is about something more primal. Power.Understanding that may be crucial to how the world responds.Yes, economics helps explain the impact. The world’s economy has after all shifted on its axis, the way it’s been run for decades turned on its head. Instead of driving world trade, America is creating a trade war. We will all feel the impact. Please…
This article contains spoilers for the Netflix series “Adolescence.” An examination bed awaits Jamie Miller at the police station. “Jamie, do you want to just hop on the bed for me? I’m just gonna take some blood if that’s okay,” nurse Erica says. “Um, I don’t really like needles,” the boy stammers. Jamie is only 13 years old, still a child. His father tries to protect him: “He’s not good with needles, love.” Jamie’s father is not yet aware that his child might be afraid of needles, but not of knives. Less than 24 hours earlier, Jamie killed his classmate Katie Leonard in a…
Every year, at least one satellite is destroyed by a space junk collision. With more than 130 million pieces of debris now trapped in orbit around Earth, the European Space Agency (ESA) expects that figure to rise. Combined with the increasing frequency of commercial space launches, which now account for most entries into Earth’s orbit, ESA is warning collisions with satellites could severely disrupt vital services like GPS services and environmental disaster monitoring. Satellites orbiting Earth now make regular collision avoidance maneuvers to avoid damage to — or the destruction of — this critical space infrastructure. These avoidance maneuvers also impact astronauts onboard the International…
The European Union’s first-ever summit with the five resource-rich states of Central Asia, will focus on critical minerals needed for a growing defense industry and the bloc’s green transformation. The EU is taking a keen interest in Central Asia that comprises Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, as realization seeped in that Europe was far too dependent on China for critical minerals. As EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa meet Central Asian leaders in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, sustainable development and Russia’s attempts to evade sanctions, among other issues, will be on the table. But most attention will…
Lise Klaveness senses the urgency of the moment in world football, and is calling on other leaders to seize it. The former Norway international player will, on Thursday, become the second woman on UEFA’s Executive Committee (ExCo), after the organization doubled their reserved places for female members to two. Klaveness, who has been pushing for change in the global game since she became president of her country’s football federation NFF in 2022, wants leadership to be more alert and protect the fundamental values of the European sports model. “We should be knowledge-based, dialogue-based, but really aware that we’re in a critical time, where fundamental values are in…
Even before his re-election as US president, Donald Trump would occassionally float the idea of remaining in office beyond the two terms permitted by the US Constitution. There are some indications that he is serious. Just recently, he told journalists at the White House that “people” were asking him to run again. When asked whether he wanted to, he said: “I don’t know, I never looked into it. They do say there is a way you can do it.” And in a phone call with US broadcaster NBC News, he did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term.…
US President Donald Trump claims tariffs is his “favorite word.” Across the Atlantic, meanwhile, the European Commission has described Trump’s trade policy as “an act of economic self-harm,” and is preparing its reponse. In the emerging trade war with the US, Brussels is treading a delicate balance of trying to look strong, while also keeping its traditional ally on side. The EU’s top trade official, Maros Sefcovic, believes Trump could impose a sweeping 20% tariff on all EU goods imported into the US by early April, significantly increasing the cost of European products. It still remains unclear whether the US will target individual countries or…
