The rout on global financial markets continued for a third day on Monday (April 7) in reaction to US President Donald Trump’s unprecedented tariffs on most trading partners of the United States. Investors are growing increasingly nervous about the prospect of a wider trade war, which would likely spark a global recession. They say the tariffs are poised to have far-reaching effects on world economic growth, due to much higher manufacturing costs, falling business confidence, market volatility and supply chain disruptions. Although the US stock markets regained some lost ground on Monday, Trump may have exacerbated further declines in Asia and Europe at the start of the…

The King and Queen are set to begin a state visit to Italy, a trip that coincides with the Catholic jubilee year, an event that only happens every 25 years. The four-day visit will see Charles and Camilla attend a series of public and diplomatic events in the capital, Rome, and the city of Ravenna. This year, Rome expects to welcome three times its normal number of visitors – between 30 and 32 million, compared to an average of 10 million – as Catholics travel to the city for the jubilee, which marks a time of pilgrimage, reflection, and spiritual renewal. The…
Herbert Bopp doesn’t plan to travel to the US anytime soon. “For decades, we were among those who loved to visit the neighboring country to the south,” writes the German native on his blog. Bopp has been living in Canada for many years. Since Trump came into office in January, he’s halted his US travel plans out of protest. “He wants to make Canada the 51st state, insults our prime minister and ridicules anything that smells of maple syrup,” says Bopp. “We’re supposed to support someone like that with our fine Canadian dollars? Certainly not.” In recent months, Trump has started a…
The release of Netflix’s “Adolescence,” which depicts the fallout from the online radicalization of young boys by misogynistic figures such as Andrew Tate, is highlighting what people have suspected for a long time: Spending too much time online has a detrimental effect on teenage minds. The show is even impacting government policy decisions. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he’d watched “Adolescence,” which has spurred the UK government to examine how to address the “emerging and growing problem” posed by online radicalization of young boys. Every generation of parents fears teenagers are being corrupted by things outside their control: Socrates was accused of corrupting…

Although it has allowed groups of Russian tourists into the country, the capital has largely remained closed to the outside world. The event is one of several in the country that will celebrate the…
A measles outbreak in southwestern United States has claimed the life of a second child, officials confirmed on Sunday. “We are deeply saddened to report that a school-aged child who was recently diagnosed with measles has passed away,” Aaron Davis, vice president of UMC Health System, a medical center in Texas, told AFP news agency. Davis added that the child had been receiving treatment for “complications of measles,” did not have any underlying conditions and was not vaccinated against the highly infectious disease.
