Worldwide, over 1 billion people are living with obesity. It’s become such a serious issue that the World Health Organization has called it an “epidemic.” According to a 2022 WHO report, Turkey ranks first in Europe for rates of overweight and obesity, with 66.8% of people affected. Turkey is also one of the world’s high-income nations that is experiencing the sharpest rise in obesity. By 2030, it’s estimated that 27 million people in Turkey — or one in three — will be obese. Health and social experts attribute this trend to insufficient nutrition, social inequality, unhealthy food supplies and a lack of coherent policy…

The tragic events of April 22, when 26 tourists were killed in Indian-administered Kashmir, were not only devastating for families and friends of the victims. They also pushed India and Pakistan into a dangerous confrontation and had consequences on the football field too. Real Kashmir FC (RKFC) has been working hard to present a different face of the region to the wider world, with some success, but now the area it represents was back in the news for all the wrong reasons. The immediate challenge is to ensure the events of April do not drive public interest and the private…
The destructive landslide in the Swiss village of Blatten is the latest natural disaster to hit valley communities in the Alpine nation. While Blatten was engulfed by a slick of icy sediment this week, early warnings of a potential landslide gave residents time to evacuate. Only one person — who chose to remain in his home — is currently unaccounted for. The search for him has been suspended. Switzerland is an early warning success story. Government agencies there use a broad range of technologies and methods to assess risks that could threaten lives and property. This includes terrain mapping and continuous monitoring of rainfall, permafrost melt,…

World Boxing on Friday announced the introduction of mandatory sex tests for both male and female fighters who want to compete in sponsored competitions. “The introduction of mandatory testing will be part of a new policy on ‘Sex, Age and Weight’ to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for men and women,” World Boxing said in a statement. The federation said it made the decision in the aftermath of controversy centered around, among others, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif at last year’s Paris Olympics. During a knockout round, Khelif’s Italian opponent refused to fight her after…
For Enoch Aikins, a political economist who focuses on Africa, the topic of sending money home to relatives is personal. “I can use myself as an example, as somebody that comes from a typical village with a lot of people or [with] a family that depends on me,” he told DW. Is the push for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) coming to an end simply because Donald Trump wants it that way? Some major US corporations, including Facebook’s parent company Meta, Google’s Alphabet, carmaker Ford and coffee giant Starbucks, have already scaled back their diversity programs. Several European companies that do business with the United States have also been asked to confirm on questionnaires that they no longer support or engage in DEI programs. In Germany, the first companies are starting to fold, with carmaker Volkswagen (VW) and telecom giant Deutsche Telekom announcing plans to either scale back or end their diversity initiatives in the US.…

Berlin’s Museum Island uniquely encapsulates Germany’s modern history — from the ideas of the Enlightenment to the destruction of World War II, from the Cold War era to its current ultra-modern restoration that has turned the ensemble of museums into a tourist magnet.
