CNN — After months of speculation, Chanel has named its new artistic director. On Thursday, Matthieu Blazy — most recently, the creative director of luxury Italian label Bottega Veneta — was appointed to one of the most high-profile jobs in fashion. Blazy is only the fourth head designer of the French fashion house founded in 1910, and follows on from Virginie Viard, Karl Lagerfeld and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. In contrast, Dior, founded in 1946, has had seven creative directors. In a press release, Chanel’s president of fashion Bruno Pavlovsky said he was “delighted” with Blazy’s appointment. “I am convinced that…
CNN — Editor’s Note: Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly, ‘Look of the Week’ is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfit of the last seven days. In an age ruled by neatly slicked buns, it’s easy to forget there was a time before extra-hold gel — when hair was encouraged to expand rather than contract. At the LA premiere for “A Complete Unknown” Tuesday night, Elle Fanning took it upon herself to remind us of those halcyon days, with a bouncy blonde beehive that acted as a portal to the past. Her 1960s-style…
Milan, Italy AP — British designer John Galliano is leaving the Maison Margiela fashion house after 10 years as artistic director, the Paris-based brand’s owner said Wednesday. No successor has been announced. “John made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world,’’ said Renzo Rosso, chairman of Italy’s OTB Group that owns Maison Margiela. Rosso said the last decade “of incredibly intense work, amazing shows and installations, extraordinary beautiful product, have laid the foundations for the future.” Galliano expressed his gratitude to Rosso for giving him a new chance, adding “I continue to atone, and I will never stop…
CNN — South Korean sharpshooter Kim Ye-ji, whose seemingly effortless shooting style and “aura” enthralled the internet this summer, is one of the stars of the latest Balenciaga campaign. The 32-year-old Olympic silver medalist joins Romeo Beckham and singer Kim Petras in a series of photographs taken around Paris, in which the models splay out or pose with couches and chairs that look as if they’ve been left outside on moving day (though they are actually from Balenciaga creative director Demna’s personal furniture collection, per the press release). “This is a Balenciaga Campaign” was shot by Juergen Teller, whose famed…
Editor’s Note: Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly, ‘Look of the Week’ is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfit of the last seven days. CNN — At the annual Gotham Awards on Tuesday night, Pamela Anderson arrived on the red carpet in a strapless champagne-hued Oscar de la Renta satin gown. As the “Baywatch” star turned to pose for the wall of photographers, a larger-than-life bow peeped out from the back of her dress. Yet her main accessory was her fresh, barely made up face. It has been over a year since Anderson…
CNN — American model Alex Consani has become the first transgender woman to win Model of the Year, following a string of high-profile runway appearances for labels like Chanel, Stella McCartney and Victoria’s Secret. The in-demand 21-year-old, who is known for her distinctive bleached hair and eyebrows, claimed the title at the 2024 Fashion Awards in London on Monday evening. In her acceptance speech, Consani told a star-studded audience at the Royal Albert Hall that her victory marked a “big step in the right direction.” “Now, more than ever, it’s an important conversation that should be had about how to…
Governors Awards red carpet: Barry Keoghan, Paul Mescal and Jude Law give creative twist on traditional shirt
CNN — At first glance you might have missed it. But hidden within the typical red carpet fanfare at the Governors Ball in Los Angeles on Sunday night was a group of sartorial renegades, each one taking aim at the traditional button-down shirt. Leading the charge was actor Barry Keoghan, dressed in a full Dolce & Gabbana suit featuring a black cropped satin jacket. The star of his ensemble was an artfully draped white pussy-bow blouse, the kind we’ve seen across Kamala Harris’ campaign trail. On Keoghan it was at once romantic and seductive, a nod to both the sleazy…
London CNN — Despite usually lasting less than 15 minutes, the modern runway show often demands months of preparation, hundreds of thousands of dollars and an army of highly skilled technicians, set builders and tailors. Yet these fleeting displays have the power to cement a designer’s legacy. Even if you’re not a devout follower of fashion, you may be familiar with some seminal runway moments — the spray-painting robots used in Alexander McQueen’s Spring-Summer 1999 show, for example, or the time Chanel launched a life-sized rocket ship during its Fall-Winter 2017 presentation. And if you did miss them, both these…
CNN — While some might be growing weary of celebrity method dressing — the styling phenomenon that sees actors match their red carpet garb to their latest movie role — character-based fashion shows no sign of stopping. Last year, Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal made sure the press tour for Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie” was saturated with considered nods to historical doll outfits. In the run up to the release of Luca Guadagnino’s erotic tennis drama “Challengers” this spring, star Zendaya wore almost exclusively white and lime green looks — often adorned with literal tennis balls. More recently,…
CNN — Limited Too’s colorful, girly clothing defined childhood for many American Millennials. Now, the brand is back — this time, for adults. The brand, which first shuttered back in 2008 amid economic woes, came back this summer at department store chain Kohl’s. The new lines featured all the classic pieces reimagined for 2024: Think sporty pullovers, plaid skorts and patterned A-line dresses, all made with tweens in mind. The outcry was immediate: Where were the adult sizes? The question from Millennials — armed with credit cards and ready to relive their youth — flooded comments sections on social media.…
