Andy Murray has been named for next month’s French Open, but Emma Raducanu, fresh from success in Britain’s Billie Jean Gold Cup final qualifying, may need another Roland ·Garros’ wild card.
Murray, 36, has battled injuries since being forced to withdraw from last year’s French Open and rupturing ankle ligaments at last month’s Miami Open. But the former Wimbledon champion was ranked 56th out of 99 players five weeks before qualifying began.
Raducanu endured a sweltering final eight months of 2023, but the former U.S. Open champion has a protected ranking of 103 and is the fifth alternate. If no player withdraws, the 21-year-old will need a wild card or qualify for the tournament, which starts on May 26.
In Munich, Jack Draper made the most of a rain delay to beat wildcard Rudolf Molleker to reach the quarter-finals of the BMW Open. Molek, ranked 179th, performed better in the first set, but a brief pause before the second set changed the momentum of the match.
After the rematch, Draper began to show his strong performance, losing only two more games, and finally won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Britain’s second seed, ranked 46th, will face either third seed Taylor Fritz or Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas.
Draper said: “I thought Rudy played an amazing level in the first set. It was very rainy and very slow. The second and third time, the sun came out and I started to feel better. I was very excited about it.” I’m very proud of the way I play.
