Baghdad/Nina/ Prime Minister Mohamed Shiaa Al-Sudani met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spolijaric Egger, on the sidelines of his Excellency’s participation in the Munich Security Conference 2024.
During the meeting, according to a statement by Al-Sudani’s office, the course of cooperation between Iraq and the International Red Cross was discussed, as the Prime Minister described the activities of the International Committee in Iraq as being of great importance and benefit to the Iraqi side, and contributing to developing the capabilities of Iraqi cadres in responding to incidents and tasks, as well as in the field of Forensic medicine and DNA identification techniques.
The statement added, “Al-Sudani urged the international organization to encourage countries to hand over their nationals from Al-Hawl camp, especially since Iraq has fulfilled its obligations to repatriate its citizens,” indicating: “The cooperation of countries will contribute to reducing the possibility that the camp and those in it are vulnerable to extremism and recruitment by the remnants of terrorism.” .
Al-Sudani reiterated his appreciation for the role of the Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the aggression in Gaza, stressing the need for major countries and international organizations to do more to prevent the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.
For her part, Spoliaric-Eger affirmed that the Red Cross will continue its efforts to deliver aid to Gaza, work to prevent the expansion of the conflict towards other Middle Eastern countries, and contribute to urging major countries to strengthen stability in the region and stop conflicts and violence./End H
