Ajla Tomljanović has been sidelined after undergoing surgery to remove a non-cancerous tumor from her uterus.
The Australian tennis player has been on the comeback trail after an injury-plagued 2023, but she revealed she will put her career on hold for “a few weeks” following surgery due to uterine fibroids.
Tomjanovich announced the news on Instagram, along with a photo of herself smiling while lying in a hospital bed.
“Hi everyone, unfortunately I won’t be competing for a few weeks… Really looking forward to the next hard court games,” she said.
“I had to have some uterine fibroids removed and I will be watching at home while I recover. Will be back soon.”
The Croatian-born right-hander added a link to her post for more information about uterine fibroids, saying it was “perfect for all of me who want (should) know more about uterine fibroids” girls and guys.”
Tomljanovic reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2022, but suffered a series of injuries in 2023 that wiped out much of her season.
The 30-year-old returned to competition late last year and reached the second round at the Australian Open, but was beaten in three sets by 11th seed Jelena Ostapenko.

“I feel like I should be angry, but I’m really cold because I don’t feel like I did anything crazy wrong,” Tomjanovic said after the defeat at Melbourne Park.
“When I think back to 12 months ago, I feel lucky to be here.”
Tomljanovic also competed in the Thailand Open last month, but was defeated in straight sets by Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi.
The world No. 221 reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 32 in April last year before undergoing surgery for knee problems.

“You never know, the knee will never feel the same. So you almost have to find a new way to go about your career,” Tomljanovic said at the Australian Open.
“It’s different at 30, your body is different and you don’t know how it’s going to react, so there are some dark moments.”
Tennis stars from around the world took to Instagram to express their support for Tomjanovic after she revealed the procedure.
“Even on the day of surgery, it still looked flawless,” said former Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady.
“Take care, get well soon and see you soon,” Australian Open doubles champion Matt Ebden posted.
“Aguila, get well soon!” added four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters.
