Baghdad – INA – Amna Al-Salami
On Monday, the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture identified the reasons for the rise in meat prices in local markets, while indicating measures to be taken to reduce prices.
Director General of the Department, Thamer Habib Hamza, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The reasons for the high prices of local meat, even though they are subject to supply and demand, are due to the greed of merchants on the one hand, as well as the high prices of feed on the other hand.”
He added, “The prices of imported meat rose due to the turmoil in the global situation, especially after October 7, which led to a reduction in the import of animals.”
He pointed out, “According to the plan that was drawn up, large quantities of imported calves for slaughter purposes entered the country in the past two days, which will lead to a reduction in meat prices in the coming period, in addition to the issuance of approval to import new quantities of calves.”
He called on “merchants and investors to be considerate of citizens regarding prices, especially as we approach the holy month of Ramadan.”
