Bafana Bafana became the latest team to upset the odds at this year’s AFCON tournament, dumping out favourites Morocco 2-0. Evidence Makgopa opened the scoring, slotting under goalkeeper Bono. Achraf Hakimi missed a golden chance to equalise, smashing a late penalty against the bar, before South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena scored a stunning free kick to make the game safe.
Earlier in the day, Mali also marched through to the quarters, edging out neighbours Burkina Faso 2-1. The Eagles opened the scoring when Bayern Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba scored an own goal. Mali made it two when Lassine Sinayoko slotted through the goalkeeper’s legs. A successful Bertrand Traoré penalty wasn’t enough to save the Stallions from crashing out.
