Billionaire British property developer Nick Candy says he only spends about 20 days a year in his £175m penthouse at One Hyde Park in London.
Candy, 51, has developed an “ultra-luxury” Knightsbridge apartment complex overlooking the Royal Park and bought himself an apartment in one. This annoyed him. The development features a private cinema, 21-metre swimming pool, as well as a sauna, gym, golf simulator, wine cellar, valet parking and room service from the five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel next door.
“I have a penthouse… I stay there 20 days a year and I pay a service fee [like] People who use the pool every day,” Candy said while discussing London’s rarely used luxury properties at a wealth management conference at London’s Savoy Hotel.
When the Guardian asked him why he spent so many days a year in the apartment on the top two floors of Building B, he said he was being rash and no longer lived in the penthouse, where he spent most of his time. Spent in the apartment.
“I don’t live in that apartment anymore, I live in Chelsea,” Candy said at Spear’s 500 Live event on Thursday. “I’m kidding. The penthouse at One Hyde Park is actually empty and I don’t live there.
Candy said the penthouse was “on the market for £175 million”, adding that he believed Sotheby’s International Realty chairman and chief executive George Azar was selling for Will be “close to this price”.
The 18,000 sq ft (1,672 sq m) apartment has been on the market since April 2021.
If it sells for closer to £175 million, it will become the most expensive apartment ever built in the UK. The record is held by the penthouse next door in Block A, which sold for £140 million in 2014. Another apartment in the development.
The most expensive property ever sold in Britain is Rutland Gate, a 45-room “private palace” just a five-minute walk from One Hyde Park, which sold for £210 million.
Candy’s penthouse has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, two wine cellars and “a wraparound terrace.” Sotheby’s describes it as “one of London’s finest residential property assets, offering unparalleled lateral living space in a super prime location in Knightsbridge with uninterrupted views over Hyde Park.”
“The double-height formal reception with an 8m ceiling height is the main entertaining space and is adorned with a magnificent glass fireplace, providing unobstructed views and an abundance of natural light.” There is also a Japanese-style “forest granite bench top and floor” kitchen.
